Tours that run in the rain
Go Sea Kayak’s listing says the tour goes ahead in the rain and that opting out because of rain does not earn a refund. Bookings cancelled less than 24 hours ahead are not refunded. If the operator cancels, the listing says GetYourGuide holds your payment, so the refund comes through GetYourGuide.
Byron Bay Sea Kayak Tour
Runs in rain. Read the 24-hour cancellation terms and the free return paddle if you see no wildlife.
See itinerary and dates on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)Soul Connect’s half-day waterfall tour on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) also says it operates in all weather.
Your own cancellations
Several listings we checked showed GetYourGuide’s free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, and a reserve-now, pay-later option. Check the terms on your own listing, as they can differ. Late arrival is a separate risk: Turtle School forfeits whale tickets more than 20 minutes late and snorkel tickets at 30 minutes, and Out Of The Blue says the boat cannot wait. The time-zone guide explains the most common cause.
Sighting guarantees are not refunds
Three operators make wildlife promises, and none is a refund. The sea kayak offers a free return paddle if you see no dolphin, turtle or whale. Turtle School lists a whale-watching guarantee. The Ballina cruise offers a free return cruise if sightings are limited. If you are only in town for a day, a return trip may be no use to you; factor that in. The Ballina cruise on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) also gives a full refund for weather cancellations.
How to plan for the weather
- Book the ocean tour on your first morning, so a cancellation can move to a later day.
- Give the operator a working mobile number; Blue Seafaris sends changes by email and SMS, and Out Of The Blue asks for a number so it can contact you.
- Check messages the evening before and the morning of.
- Note each operator’s check-in time; arriving late is not covered by any weather policy.
- Have a land-based fallback: the hinterland, glow worms or an indoor option from our rainy-day list.
Our three-day itinerary is built around this order.
Questions people ask
Do Byron whale tours get cancelled often?
The listings do not say how often. All three whale operators state what happens if they cancel. Have a fallback day.
Will I get my money back?
If the operator cancels for weather, every boat listing above offers a refund or an alternative. If you cancel yourself, check the 24-hour terms on your listing.
What should I do on the day it is cancelled?
Rebook while you still have days left, then pick from rainy-day options or a hinterland tour.
Before you book: the weather checklist
- What does this operator offer if it cancels: date, voucher or refund?
- What is your own cancellation deadline?
- Is the tour on your first day, with a spare day after?
- Have you given a mobile number that works in Australia?
- Do you understand any guarantee is a return trip, not a refund?
