Byron Bay tours for limited mobility: what the listings say

Many Byron tours involve wading, paddling or uneven ground, and their listings say so. Here is what each listing states, so you can rule out the wrong ones quickly.

Tour links go to GetYourGuide. If you book through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which tours we recommend. How we choose tours →

The short answer

  • Rule out most water tours: several exclude mobility impairments, back problems or wheelchair users. See the exclusions →
  • Vehicle-based tours and the big Ballina whale boat state no mobility exclusion. Ask before booking. See the options →
  • For free: the accessible Minyon Falls lookout and beach wheelchairs for hire. See free options →

A word on “no exclusion stated”

A listing that does not exclude mobility impairments is not the same as an accessible tour. It means only that the listing does not say. Contact the operator with your specific needs before you pay; GetYourGuide listings show the operator’s name.

Ballina whale cruise

In season, a large purpose-built vessel with a toilet on board, boarding from a floating pontoon beside the Ballina RSL Club, where parking is free. The listing states no exclusions. Ask about step-free boarding.

Wildlife safari, sanctuary tour and private day

The full-day safari on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) describes its walks as fairly easy and adapted to the group. The Tesla sanctuary tour takes up to four guests, and the Gold Coast private day has a fully flexible itinerary. None states a mobility exclusion.

River cruises and Haven Gallery

The M.V. Jasmine cruises board at the Brunswick Heads jetty and have two decks; the listings say nothing about access, so ask. Haven Gallery is indoors in a converted building. The Cape Byron Aboriginal walk is described as easy, over 90 minutes.

Free options

NSW National Parks grades the Minyon Falls lookout in Nightcap National Park as easy, with an accessible path suitable for wheelchairs, plus toilets and parking. Waterfalls near Byron has more.

Byron Shire Council’s beaches page links to information on beach wheelchairs for hire in the Shire. The Walgun Cape Byron Walking Track, by contrast, is graded 3 and rated hard for accessibility by NPWS, but the lighthouse is also reached by vehicle on the hinterland day. The lighthouse walk explains the track.

Questions people ask

Is there a whale tour for wheelchair users?

The Pass trip excludes wheelchair users. The Ballina boat states no exclusion; ask about boarding. Or watch from the Cape Byron viewing platform; see whale season and lookouts.

What if I have back problems?

The sea kayak, the Pass whale trip, both snorkel tours and the SUP lesson exclude back problems. Vehicle tours and river cruises are the gentler options; check with the operator.

Which tours are least physical?

The hinterland day, the Jasmine cruises, Haven Gallery and the Aboriginal walk. Seasickness options are covered separately.

Toilets and parking

The Ballina whale boat lists a toilet on board, and NSW National Parks lists toilets at the Minyon Falls picnic area. Neither says whether they are accessible, so ask. The Cape Byron Aboriginal walk meets at The Pass Cafe, where parking is paid and busy; the Ballina cruise has free parking at the RSL club.

Before you book: the access checklist

  • Does the listing exclude anything that applies to you?
  • If it says nothing, have you asked the operator directly?
  • How do you board, and is there a step, a wade or a pontoon?
  • How far is it from the car park to the start?
  • Is there a toilet on board or at the venue?
