Whale season: June to November
The marine park’s managers say humpbacks pass north from May to July and south with calves from August to November. Visit NSW says tours generally start in June, with July the peak of the northern run and September the peak of the southern one, when calves come close to shore. Month-by-month detail.

Turtle School’s Julian Rocks listing sets out the seasons: leopard sharks and manta rays in summer; grey nurse sharks and humpback whales in winter; rays, sea turtles and hundreds of fish species all year. The marine park’s managers describe the mix of warm tropical and cooler water that brings both kinds of species here.

Lifeguard patrols
Byron Shire Council keeps lifeguards on Main Beach all year, five days a week, 9 am to 5 pm. Clarkes, The Pass, Wategos and Tallow are patrolled over the summer holidays and the autumn school holidays; several beaches further out only over summer. If you want a choice of patrolled beaches, those holiday periods give it. Beach safety in full.
Crowds
Visit NSW warns that The Pass can get very crowded in summer, which matters if you are learning to surf. The lifeguard extensions over the Christmas and New Year period, and extra patrols for schoolies, point to the busiest times on the beaches. Outside school holidays you will find more space on the sand and at the car parks, which NSW National Parks says are already limited at weekends on the cape.
Surfing and paddling all year
None of the surf, sea kayak or river kayak listings is limited to a season. The kayak listing mentions a wetsuit on cooler days, and Lets Go Surfing supplies warm wetsuits. The sea kayak tour on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) may also meet humpbacks from June to October, according to its listing. The small-group surf lesson on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) includes a warm wetsuit; see beginner surf beaches.
Waterfalls and the hinterland
NSW National Parks warns that Minyon Falls may not flow strongly in a dry spell, so check recent rain before you go. The half-day waterfall tour runs in all weather. Waterfalls near Byron.
The clocks
From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, NSW is an hour ahead of Queensland. If you are basing yourself on the Gold Coast, plan tour times around it. The time difference explained.
