What every lesson has in common
Each listing describes teaching the basics, such as paddling, catching waves and standing up. None names a fixed beach, so read your confirmation. Visit NSW points to Clarkes Beach at high tide and the gentler days at The Pass as good places to learn, and our beginner beaches guide explains why.
Two of the four listings exclude non-swimmers, and the others give no swimming rule. Be honest about your confidence in the water.
The small-group lesson: Lets Go Surfing
Lets Go Surfing’s lesson gives you two hours on the beach and in the water, about three hours overall, with no more than six surfers per instructor. You meet at the Lets Go Surfing desk at 5/11 Fletcher Street. The listing says it is one of the few operators licensed to teach in Byron Bay.
A soft board, warm wetsuit, rash vest, sunscreen and zinc, changing rooms, somewhere secure for your belongings and an outdoor shower are included. Bring your own swimwear and towel. The minimum age on this listing is 12, and pregnancy is excluded. The same listing mentions lessons for children from 5 among the school’s other experiences, so ask if you have younger kids.
2-hour small-group surf lesson
Check the minimum age (12), bring swimwear and a towel, and meet at the Fletcher Street desk.

Byron Bay Surf School’s group lesson runs for two and a half hours with accredited coaches: surf awareness, paddling, catching waves and standing up. The listing excludes children under 6 and non-swimmers, which makes it the option on this page for the youngest learners. It does not state a meeting point; check your confirmation.
Group surf lesson, Byron Bay Surf School
Check the meeting point in your confirmation and the minimum age of 6.

The same school’s private lesson is two hours of tuition for you alone, with structured coaching for any level. The listing says the school is one of few licensed to teach on local Byron beaches. Non-swimmers are excluded. Private coaching suits nervous beginners and people who want to fix a specific part of their surfing.
2-hour private surf lesson

Kool Katz Surf School’s lesson is titled full-day but runs four hours, with no more than six people per instructor and lesson, board and wetsuit included. Food and drinks are not. You must phone or text the day before to confirm the time, which depends on tide and swell.
Check where it runs. The listing’s web address calls it a Ballina group lesson and it gives no meeting point. Ballina is south of Byron; Visit NSW describes Sharpes Beach, north of Ballina, as having gentle waves for learners. The minimum age is 5, with a long list of medical exclusions, and a 140 kg weight limit.
4-hour surf lesson, Kool Katz
Confirm where the lesson runs, then phone or text the day before for your time.

A day tour from Surfers Paradise packages a beginner lesson with a Byron afternoon and a sunset walk to the lighthouse, but the lesson itself is at Kingscliff, not Byron. See day trips from the Gold Coast.
Questions people ask
Can you learn to surf in one lesson?
None of the listings promises it. The Kool Katz listing aims to get you riding a wave on your first go, but conditions decide.
Where should I surf after my lesson?
Stay at a patrolled beach and between the flags. Main Beach has lifeguards all year, five days a week. Read the beach safety basics before you go out alone.
Can I surf with my kids?
Ages 6 and up can join the Byron Bay Surf School group lesson, 5 and up the Kool Katz session. Byron with kids has more.
Before you book: the surf lesson checklist
- Does everyone meet the minimum age, and can they swim?
- Where do you meet? Two listings leave it to your confirmation.
- Is anything on the medical exclusion list relevant to you?
- Have you packed swimwear and a towel?
- Is the time NSW time, and does it depend on the tide?
