What happens on the day
Skydive Australia runs the jump from a beachside drop zone about 15 minutes from Byron Bay, with parking, barbecues and picnic areas. You train with an instructor first, then climb for about 20 minutes on a scenic flight over Byron and the surf beaches. From up to 15,000 feet you get up to 60 seconds of freefall, then five to seven minutes floating under the canopy before landing back at the drop zone.
The listing gives four to six hours in all; the description calls it a four-hour activity. Leave the rest of the day free.
Included: training, the scenic flight, the jump, a certificate, three months’ membership of the Australian Parachute Federation and its compulsory personal accident insurance. Photos and video are sold separately at the drop zone, according to the Brisbane version’s listing.

- Age: 16 and over. Under-18s need written parental consent.
- Weight: up to 110 kg. A weight surcharge applies above 94 kg, and you must tell the operator in advance.
- Pregnancy: excluded.
- Clothes: comfortable clothes and shoes; the Brisbane listing says no open-toed shoes.
If you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor and the operator before booking. This is not something to decide on the day.
The risk warning
Every version of the listing carries a formal warning: parachuting is inherently dangerous; the parachute may open abruptly or not correctly despite careful packing; and incidents can happen in the aircraft, during the descent or on landing. You take part at your own risk. Read the full wording on the listing before you pay. We mention it because it is there, not to put you off.
From the Gold Coast or Brisbane
Skydive Australia sells the same jump with return transfers.
From the Gold Coast
Pickup is at the Mantra on View, 22 View Avenue, Surfers Paradise, and the day is about six hours. The listing gives the time as “8:00 AM (7:00AM AEDT)”, which does not add up: from October to April, NSW is an hour ahead of Queensland, so 8 am on the Gold Coast is 9 am in Byron. Confirm your pickup time directly. The time difference explained.
