Brunswick River kayak tours: a sunset paddle or a kayak-and-waterfall day

The Brunswick River at Brunswick Heads, just north of Byron, is calm water with mangroves, birds and stingrays. Two tours paddle it, for very different days.

The short answer

Why the river, not the sea?

The sea kayak off Main Beach paddles out through waves and excludes non-swimmers and children under 6. The river is flat water. The sea kayak operator itself recommends its river tour for non-swimmers. If your group includes small children, nervous paddlers or anyone who gets motion sickness, the river is the gentler choice. For the ocean version, read the dolphin kayak guide.

The sunset paddle: Go Sea Kayak

Go Sea Kayak’s river tour runs for two hours, starting late in the afternoon on a rising tide so you paddle into the sunset. The listing mentions pelicans and sea eagles, stingrays resting in the shallows under your kayak, and mangroves to paddle through. Numbers are limited, and you choose a single or double kayak on the day.

All safety gear, a kayak lesson before you set off, the guide and free photos are included. Pickup, food and drinks are not. The only stated exclusions are children under 3 and back problems. Bring a sun hat, swimwear, a change of clothes, a towel and water; there is a secure area for your belongings.

Meet at the Brunswick Heads Scout Hall, a small light-brick building with a terracotta roof set back from the street; walk round to the river side at the back.

The kayak, hike and waterfall day: Soul Connect

Soul Connect Nature Tours’ four-and-a-half-hour day starts with a high-tide paddle through the mangroves. The listing mentions stingrays, eagles and fish, and if you are lucky dolphins or green sea turtles. You then drive into the mountains by SUV or 4WD for a rainforest hike, with a swim in a mountain stream and waterfall. Binoculars are provided for watching wildlife without disturbing it.

Guides, kayak gear, a safety briefing, national park fees and photos are included. Lunch is not, so pack food or bring money. Byron pickup costs extra and is available only sometimes. The minimum age is 13, and the listing excludes mobility impairments and heart problems. No drones.

The listing gives the meeting point as the Scout Hall next to the Community Centre; check your confirmation.

Getting to Brunswick Heads

Go Sea Kayak puts Brunswick Heads about 15 minutes from Byron. Neither tour includes transport as standard, so you need a car, a taxi or rideshare. If you want the river without paddling, the M.V. Jasmine brunch cruise on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) also leaves Brunswick Heads harbour; see the river cruises compared. Visit NSW notes Torakina Beach, behind the river breakwall, is calm enough for the littlest swimmers.

Questions people ask

Is the Brunswick River kayak good for beginners?

Yes. It is flat water, there is a lesson first, and doubles are available. Back problems are the main exclusion.

Will I see dolphins on the river?

The river tours focus on birds, stingrays and mangroves. The eco tour mentions dolphins and turtles as a lucky extra. For dolphins, the sea kayak or a boat trip gives better odds.

Can we do it with small children?

The sunset paddle accepts ages 3 and up. Byron with kids lists everything by age.

Before you book: the river kayak checklist

  • Sunset paddle or a fuller day with a hike?
  • Does everyone meet the minimum age (3 or 13)?
  • How will you get to Brunswick Heads?
  • Have you packed water, a hat and a change of clothes, plus lunch for the eco day?
  • Is the time NSW time, and does it follow the tide?
