How to get to Byron Bay, and where its tours meet

Byron has no airport of its own; two are within an hour. Once you are there, tours meet in several places, some of them outside town. Here is how it fits together.

The short answer

The airports

Visit NSW describes Ballina Byron Gateway Airport as less than 30 minutes’ drive from Byron Bay, and Gold Coast Airport as about 45 minutes by car. Brisbane Airport is further; shuttles run from there too. Gold Coast Airport sits on the Queensland side, so from October to April your watch changes by an hour when you cross into NSW.

Shuttles and transfers

Visit NSW lists several transfer services to Byron from Ballina, Gold Coast and Brisbane airports, including shuttles that link the Gold Coast to central Byron. Compare them on Visit NSW’s Byron transport page. If you are staying on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane for the trip, some tours bring you to Byron themselves; see Gold Coast day trips and Brisbane day trips.

Where tours meet

Tours that pick you up

These listings include pickup from Byron accommodation: the hinterland and Bangalow day, the evening glow-worm e-bike tour, the full-day wildlife safari, the Tesla sanctuary tour, the brewery and distillery day, and the e-bike distillery day (within its area). The half-day waterfall tour lists Byron pickup but also a meeting corner, so check.

The glow-worm tour on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) and the wildlife safari on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) are two that pick up and drop off, so you need no car at all.

Check-in times

Operators expect you early, and some are strict. From the listings: the sea kayak asks you to arrive 25 minutes before your time; Turtle School’s whale trip forfeits your ticket if you are more than 20 minutes late, and its snorkel tour at 30 minutes; Out Of The Blue asks for 30 minutes and says the boat cannot wait; M.V. Jasmine asks for 20 minutes; the Lets Go Surfing paddleboard tour, 15. Build that into your travel time, and remember it is NSW time.

Parking

NSW National Parks says parking at the lighthouse and other car parks on the cape is paid by the hour and limited at weekends. The Aboriginal walk listing warns that parking at The Pass is paid and busy. Turtle School says public parking in Byron costs extra and is not included. If you can, walk or cycle to town meeting points. The Ballina whale cruise is the exception: parking at the RSL club is free.
